A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
