The nation’s food inspection agency has announced it aims to begin a total removal of hundreds of these large birds at a farm after the highest judicial body declined to stop the disputed cull.

Legal Obstacles Removed by Court Ruling

Thursday’s ruling eliminated any legal impediment to starting the slaughter.

The ostrich farm, located close to the community of Edgewood, was initially directed in May to eradicate nearly 400 birds, due to concerns of an spread of avian influenza.

Earlier this week, officials seized control of the business.

Nearly seventy birds have previously perished after the emergence of a influenza-like sickness.

On Wednesday, Canada’s supreme court issued an interim stay on the cull order as it considered whether to hear the case.

The increasing controversy over the birds – and a simmering post-pandemic skepticism – have inspired demonstrators to gather at the farm, with many broadcasting their frustration on online platforms.

The situation has also entered the nation’s political sphere.

Earlier this fall, the opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, was asked repeatedly by reporters whether he supported protesters.

The Conservative figure has steered clear of making specific comments on the issue, even though many within his party voicing opposition against the cull.

He told reporters the situation had been poorly handled from the start but avoided mentioning the word “ostrich”.

Cross-Border Interest and Proposals

Several prominent individuals from the United States have petitioned Canadian officials.

The American health chief offered to relocate the birds to his ranch in the Sunshine State.

An American wealthy businessman has also appealed with the authorities to reverse its eradication directive.

Scientific and Ethical Debates

The national authorities said the food inspection agency was adhering to a “stamping out” policy in order to contain the spread of bird flu, a move consistent with wider guidance from global health organizations.

However, animal advocacy groups have called on the authority to conduct further testing on the animals to confirm they are carrying the virus.

The ranch operators said that because the last bird flu death happened on 15 January 2025, with the remaining birds seeming in good condition or healed, the group has developed at least some level of immunity against the virus.

They have also expressed skepticism on the extent and effectiveness of testing on the ostriches.

Ranch Spokesperson Response

Recently, the farm’s spokesperson, informed the press that the authority was “murdering” healthy birds.

“These are prehistoric animals that have survived millions of years, but they won’t endure the Canadian Food Inspection Agency,” she said.

A co-owner said he was “afraid that there is no justice left”.

Court and Agency Findings

A federal court, on the other hand, found that allowing the ostriches to stay alive could result in the spread of avian influenza to other animals, the livestock sector – or to people.

The authority has not announced at what time it plans to begin culling the birds.

Eradication Procedures

A 2016 agency manual, obtained under public access laws, says the birds can be killed by various methods, the recommended being injection, which needs three people: one person to restrain the bird by sitting on its back, another to secure the head, and a third to administer the injection.

Personnel can also use gas chambers or break the birds’ necks.

Employees of the agency can only use firearms on the birds in extreme circumstances, if they have a trained shooter on the premises.

According to media sources, soon after the judicial decision, inspection agents started installing additional gear and bright lights around a makeshift pen near the back of the bird enclosure.
