One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner Unilever blocked the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product within an individual series highlighting issues the company was prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner

The recent development deepens the continuing tension between the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders maintain that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions

Mr. Cohen revealed how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
