British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
