Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS ought to be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved no match even for a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
