European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
