We are checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
