German Mayor Critically Injured in Stabbing Attack, Police Confirm
A newly-elected mayor in western Germany has been attacked with a knife and left critically injured close to her residence, police say.
The official, 57 years old, is a member of the SPD political group and became the mayor of the municipality in the regional state in last month.
Local police say a significant response is in progress in the small town. Officials indicate all avenues are being explored, but they are considering a domestic link.
The Chancellor condemned what he described as "a heinous act", stating: "We are concerned about the survival of the mayor-elect, Iris Stalzer, and wish for complete healing."
The SPD said its members were deeply shocked by the attack.
Officials say her two children - a daughter, 17, and a 15-year-old son - contacted emergency services to police at noon (11:00 BST).
The minors were later taken away for questioning and forensic investigation. A reporter at the scene witnessed a teenager entering a police patrol car.
This summer, there was an incident of domestic violence in the family, which was documented by authorities, security sources said.
