I believed I nicked it - Carey on review reprieve.

Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey admitted he felt he had feathered the ball when he was overturned on Decision Review System during day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test against England.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey went on to make a fine 106 to help the Australians reach 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.

The Key Moment

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.

England appealed confidently, believing they had detected an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

Following skipper Ben Stokes opted to review the on-field call, the footage examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a spike but this registered before the ball had made contact with the bat.

Gaffaney added he believed there was a space between bat and ball.

Consequently, Carey was reprieved.

"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," said Carey.

"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Technology Debate

Discussion has swirled about 'the Snickometer' during the series after a series of unclear calls.

Bowling coach David Saker suggested England may escalate this latest incident to a higher level with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker remarked.

"It's been a worry for us all series long. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's where we are."

Personal Milestone

His hundred was his first in the Ashes.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in September. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by pointing to the heavens.

"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," stated Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. But, no, it was great."

History of Controversy

This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.

He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, resulting in a febrile final day.

On his reprieve he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."

"I might have gotten away with one."
