Italy's Court Great Nicola Pietrangeli Dies at Ninety-Two

The world of tennis says goodbye to a genuine icon: Nicola Pietrangeli, a double French Open champion, has died at ninety-two.

Pietrangeli etched his name by becoming the initial Italian to win a Grand Slam singles title, securing his maiden triumph at the French Open in 1959 and retaining the prestigious trophy a year later.

With an impressive 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was long held to be the country's greatest ever player until the rise of current world number two and four-time major winner Jannik Sinner.

"Italian tennis is mourning an titan. Nicola Pietrangeli, the only Italian enrolled in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has died," confirmed the national federation.

Beyond his two French Open triumphs, Pietrangeli also reached the final in Paris in the years 1961 and 1964.

He set a remarkable 164 matches played for Italy in the Davis Cup, securing victories in 120 of them, and guided his country to its maiden title in 1976.

Officials of the Italian Open, where he was a two-time winner, stated: "It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
