As he approaches his sixth anniversary in charge, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

Arteta assumed control on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph within months. Yet, that first major trophy is still his only top-tier trophy following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” he stated in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things must occur in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the landmark with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal met the day after his role was made public.

Present Challenges

Given that chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

The manager is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that success is required sooner rather than later.

Earning the Right

The manager expanded, stressing the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

Arteta continued, praising the unwavering support from the club's ownership, yet identifying the squad's dedication as most crucial. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the Everton match managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is anticipated to keep him out for the coming weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he initially took over.

He pointed to the squad's displays as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And we want to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
