The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in 25 Years.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of California is facing dryness. This landmark event follows difficult years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated fire dangers and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Indicates Zero Drought

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that all of California is free from any level of drought. This development came after multiple significant storms that topped up water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their long-term norms.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

The journey here featured severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, causing significant overflow, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, pockets like Modoc County were considered experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge

But, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation place it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for long-term water security. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to make predictions for the months ahead.

“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to maintaining this precious water balance throughout the rest of the year.
