The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
